Im looking for a new trail bike. I can get a 2022 stumpjumper evo comp carbon on sale for 4500 or a 2022 stumpjumper comp carbon for 4700 +100 shipping (4800). Im mainly trail riding trails with lots of roots and punchy drop ins and climb outs. No long climbs or long downhill runs. I dont do big jumps/drops etc and my local trails do require quite a bit of pedaling. Would the evo be too much bike even set in the high bb and steepest hta? Is anyone riding an evo on trails that are NOT mostly downward pointing and happy with the pedaling efficiency? I pedaled the evo around the lbs parking lot and it felt like it pedaled well but its been too long since I demoed the regular SJ for me to be able compare.

Nice! I didnt realize the shipping is free to the dealer. Thanks for pointing that out.
No Problem!

I also personally own a Stumpy Comp Carbon non-evo. I ride east coast trails that I would describe similarly to what you said about your trails and I think it suits them perfectly! I was a little concerned about the rear end losing some small bump compliance going away from a pivot back there but it's been great and I think it does everything really well. I also took it to some more technical terrain over the weekend and hit drops and jumps without any issues.

From what you said I think the reg stumpy would work better for you than the evo.

The Evo is too much bike for that kind if riding. Unless you plan on taking it other places and really getting rowdy the regular Stumpy should be perfect. If you have not there are some good reviews on youtube to check out that talk about the flex stays.

How do you like the SJ? Does the rear suspension still feel active and plush without the horst link?
I have the 2021 SJ in both alloy and carbon and I don’t think the carbon suspension feels as active and plush. I started with the alloy comp version and after reading so much about the carbon version decided to get a frame and try it myself. I do like the carbon version, but it is different. The carbon feels more like a XC bike and the alloy feels more like a trail bike. Between purchasing those two bikes, I also got the ‘21 Evo comp and really like it too, but it is a different animal, which is why I wanted it too. My SJ’s are both S3 and the Evo is an S4 that I have set up for descending. In the high and steep settings, it “almost“ rides like the alloy SJ on the same terrain.

I’d describe many of the trails I ride as you described your trails and I’d say you can’t go wrong with any of them, but they’re all a bit different. The Evo is likely a bit too much bike more often jthan the SJ is not enough bike, if that makes sense. In the end, it will probably depend on if you want to occasionally be over biked or occasionally be under biked. I think the option to change geo on the Evo just makes it more versatile if you only have 1 bike and ride a variety of different trails often.

I just finished building up my carbon ‘22 SJ. Factory 34 FIT 4 on the front. Running it 130/130 for now. Ridden about 25 miles of varying Colorado terrain, flow, tech, semi-gnar. So far I am amazed of how it handles and feels on the trail. I am coming off a GG Smash , 160/145 with a coil and I don’t miss it one bit yet. That’s my input.

Get the Evo. Geometry adjust can get you closer to the SJ but you can’t get the SJ close to the EVO. I run my Evo steep/high for local trails very similar to what you’re riding and am super happy with it. But for trail systems farther out w steep downs I can slack it out and I’m super happy there as well. Evo as close as u can get to true one bike solution.

I think people are way overbiked in general, if you have good geo, for the most part you don’t need a ton of travel. It also depends on your riding ability, more travel can help make up for errors. You probably won’t go wrong with either version, but if you aren’t hitting drops, big gnarly terrain, the Evo seems like overkill to me.

Wow. You are the guy to ask these questions to!

One quick one if I may - how do you find the Evo climbing compared to the non-Evo? For me, the 2018 SJ almost killed me on climbs. That bike came with 2.6s stock, but still. I always felt gassed at the summit after sustained climbs. My suspicion is that the non-Evo is a far better climber but maybe not.

I bought my daughter a 2021 SJ carbon Comp largely on the strength of the PB review. She is coming off a 2015 Kona Process 134 and absolutely loves the SJ. I do too. The SLX spec is all killer, no filler.

Regular SJ climbs better than the Evo, but the Evo isn’t bad. Evo climbing improved when I dumped the stock T9 Butcher/T7 Eliminator and replaced them with an Assegai max terra and DHR dual compound.

How are you liking the 130mm travel in front ? I’ve been contemplating on going down to 130 from 140.
