I went through another strap wrench today and am looking for suggestions on nice ones.

Desired parameters:
-Tough
-Replaceable strap
-Plastic coating on teeth that engage strap so if you slip you don't f-up shock body
-Smallish, I've got a 9point8 Fall Line and it is super hard to get the collar nut off (WRENCH FLATS!!!, if you're listening 9point8)

Don't know how tight your collar nut is but on my KS Lev I just use a section of old inner tube wraped around the collar nut and my hand.

Have never broken a strap-wrench, have a few, using that to remove a collar though is asinine on the part of the company. I would suggest heating it up with a hair-dryer first to help break it free, maybe use some penetrant too.

I've wrapped things like that with a strip of hard rubber, tightened a hose clamp on it, and then gripped the hose clamp gently pushing against the hose clamp screw with channel-locks to turn it.

Worst one I have ever used.

But buy a few cheap plastic ones, throw away when worn.

Strap wrenches belong in the same category as hammers & adjustable wrenches imo. I have a 9POINT8 post I just serviced. I used a method similar to Lone Rager. The hose has to be stiff or you could dig the plier teeth into the collar surface. I used pliers w/ a circular jaw : CHANNELLOCK® 442 V-Jaw Plier 12"

They don’t have replaceable straps but they were cheap (forget just how much) but I got a two pack of craftsmen strap wrenches that have worked out good for me. I also have a Mac one with tough cloth belt and steel buck that uses a 3/8 or 1/2 drive ratchet but not suitable for delicate stuff.
