Not familiar w/ the Fox 40 but you could spray some soapy water on the area / compress to better isolate the air leaking.BikenBrew said:

Need help, I recently purchased a used 40 rc2 that appears to be in pretty good condition except that it is leaking oil from the area of the wheel pinch bolts on the spring side. When you take the 2 bolts out and compress the fork(with the bike upside down) you can hear air coming from that area. The black cylinder that contains the threads for the 2 bolts seems to be in good shape. It seems as if there is a hole on the inside of the lowers allowing oil to leak into the pinch bolt area. It's definitely coming from the pinch bolt holes on the spring side. When the bolts are in and tight, the oil leaks from the side of the fork leg around the black cylinder that has the threads for the pinch bolts. If I take the bolts out you can easily hear and feel air (with the bike upside down) coming from those holes. Does anyone know if the bolts and/or threaded cylinder are supposed to be sealing oil in the lowers?
From what you describe, you need new lowers.
That's what I was afraid of, but I wonder how a hole could have happened inside. The hole has to be behind the 2 clamping bolts, frustrating.
most likely someone put a bolt in there that was too long (or overtightened the crap out of the stock bolt) and it protruded out the back and through the casting.
