my new Trek is almost a month old. The Suntour XCM V3 fork is leaking oil from the right side lower. Only 71 miles on it.

A fork upgrade is not in the budget at the moment...could the bolt at the bottom just need tightening? How much oil is in there? It's not a dripping leak, but it's defifitely wet.

Suntour forks have damper cartridges and grease on the bushings rather then semi bath oil (2010 and older anyway, the could have made them semi bath in 2011 but I doubt it). If its leaking oil you probably have a faulty damper cartridge and should get it warrantied.

According to the Trek webpage, the fork has a mechanical lockout...no damper

So maybe the 2012 Suntour forks use some kind of bath oil. It's under warranty so I'd get it looked at whatever the case may be.

Thats good to know and a decent step forwards for suntour if they do use bath oil now.

SR Suntour still utilizes our cartridge based technology from our entry level products all the way to the World Cup and World Champion level Axon series. These are a nitrogen gas sealed cartridge and will not leak oil. It is possible the fork came with a mechanical system that utilizes 2 telescoping rods that depending on the upper ones orientatin will block the lower unit. The SR Suntour XCM can come in either HLO or MLO depending on what the bike co. has requested form us.

What you are most likely experiencing is a light weight grease we use to lubricate the bushings and sliders. This grease will break down and weep for a bit until the excess is gone.

It never hurts to have your local dealer inspect the fork just in case and for a good peice of mind.
