Which would you choose. They are both at the same price point, and I'm just trying to hang onto this bike a year or so longer (so discs are out of the question). My current rear brake is complete garbage, the pads get worn in the most ridiculous manner, and I'm flat out of adjustments to make in an attempt to fix it. I'll go from rubbing on every rotation to squeezing it all the way to the grips in one muddy ride.

Here are the choices of V-brakes - Shim XT vs. Avid single 7's vs. any viable suggestion given.

I know V-brakes may be ancient history for most of you, but which is better in terms of set it and forget it and overall stopping power. I don't care if it squeals like mad, I just want to stop again!

avids would be my choice... I'm sure chimano has done away with the play problems their old linear's had. but I've been happy with avid for many yrs & have 'em on all my bikes (aside from a variety of old canti's)
