Did you actually take it apart and clean each piece, then re-lube with a light oil? My XTR rapid fires started acting up. I took them apart, carefully, and sure enough, the original grease had gotten hard and yucky. I cleaned each piece with WHite Lightening cleaner, and used shimano oil, and they are like new now. Just spraying stuff in there won't do it. I'm assuming your shifters have screws to take them apart. Be patient, there are quite a few pieces in those shifters.
Sticky Rapidfire Plus Lever
ok, my search on the above topic yielded nothing, though I'm sure this has come up before:
My rear 9-speed Deore LX rapidfire + shift lever is sticking, well not the lever but the internal gear or "catch" that shifts it to a larger cog in back. I can spray the crap out of the inside with some teflon spray and work it free, but it eventually just gums up again - so that when you push the lever with your thumb, nothing catches, and obviously no shift. If I keep pushing the lever it eventually catches to a allow a shift, then it's back to square one. Shifting to a higher gear (smaller cog) is not a problem.
I ride year round in Michigan, and this happens quite often in the winter so I've switched most of my bikes to gripshift, which does not suffer the same problem, no matter how cold it is. Of course now it's 70-80 degrees and this one shifter is still a PITA.
Any hints or is it junk?

well, I'd heard horror stories about shimano gear chaning mechanisms exploding into a million microscopic bits and pieces upon disassmbly, but I tackled it anyway. I basically just took the bottom part of the shell off with the 3 phillips screws (with the triggers attached), blasted the interior gears out nice and good with WD40 and a lot of compressed air. Let it all dry out, squirted a little Pedros Syn Grease in there and re-assembled. Seems to all work very well now - even if it doesn't last forever, it didn't take too long. Certainly I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
