How involved is it to change out a stem? I've got a '02 Trek 90 Fuel with a Bontrager Select. I'm looking for something with a little more length, but is it something I'd be able to take on myself, or should I bring it to the shop?
You have to loosen the handlebars. Then u got the steerer top cap nut. Then the bolts that clamp the stem to steerer. Thats it. Just have a good eye to keep it straight when your done.
Its not a very hard job, but its worth taking it to the shop and having them show you how to do it, even if it costs a few bucks. Better to learn hands-on since not tightening the stem cap enough or even too much after installing the new stem can ruining the headset or head tube.
