stem problem

3007 Views 28 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  MTB Skippy
i have a very short steerer tube on my bike, and from the headset up, it prob sticks up and inch and 1/2. but the ringle stem is higher than that and the top bolt on the stem doesent even clamp onto the steerer tube. i and when i pedal up a hill i can hear all this flex in the stem area because the stem does not completely clamp onto the steerer tube

is there a cheap stem out there that can clamp low? i was looking at the 5th pic on this site
( SIC LL Stem) and it looks like the clamping area on the steerer tube is low, but its way to much money
is there a cheaper stem out there?

thanks

try a KORE B1B stem, it has a 1.25" stack height and comes in a 45,55 & 65mm lengths, plus there only like $30.00.

Edit: One thing too note is it only comes in a 25.4 clamp, no 31.8 option.

The Race Face Diabolus stem has a 1 1/2 inch stack height. Not cheap, but SuperGo has them on sale for $70.
go intergrated
czech out the funn serial smx. it looks like it has a way short clamp height. and it looks way cooler than the kore.

i wish i can, but i have a 02 super t and it has no mountain holes on the upper crown
all i know is that my ringle stem is 46mm ( about 1.8 inches) high, and the steerer tube sticks out from the headset... about 26mm ( 1.02 inch)

is there a stem that clamps lower than 26mm???? what is the term called that clamps onto the steerer tube?
If you buy a S.I.C. stem I will trade you my Diabulos.
i may be getting this

the red indicated the height of that part of the stem. my steerer tube pops up from the head tube about 26mm.... this looks low enough???

doubtful you'll find a stem suited for DH/FR thats only got that small of a clamp area. Anyhow if the steerer sticks out from the top of the headset 26mm, you'd need a stem with a 30mm steerer clamp since the stem needs to be @4mm higher than the steerer tube.

On another note, what headset are you using?? Some headset have shorter stack heights than others, so maybe you could get a shorter headset, just a thought.

you could get a steerer extension, but it still might not fit on the short part.
Not a good idea for a FR/DH bike. Those extenders are usually suggested for cruiser type bikes, meant for casual riding.

im using a 1.5 to 1/8th reducer can creek something or other

to make it simple hopefully

the yellow represents the steerer tube
the big box is the headtube
the green box is the stem part that is taller than the steerer tube

when i pedal uphill and pull on my bars, i can hear is creaking and flexing cause its all not tight and flush together.... and i just email funn to see how high the stem part is

According to FUNN the stack height of that stem is 42mm (1.65"), too tall for your steerer. :( Good luck.

my bud got one of those for 12.... great stem. you should've looked at the aircorp i had for sale, but it's sold.
I assume that You have some FR/DH rig, so weight is less important than durability. So stop looking for the stem - get something like this:

http://www.bbbparts.com/products/bike_parts/headparts/bhp20.htm

I'm not sure if BBB parts are aviable at Your LBS, but there must be some equivalent. You'll get some weight penalty (aprox. 250g), but You can put any stem You like. :)

serhij
the atomlab aircorp stem is 1 3/8" tall. it comes in i think 50 or 30mm.

What you should do first and foremost is stop riding that bike. That is very dangerous, and the last place you want ill fitting/performing parts is in your steering areas. Just a recommendation, your safety is only your concern.
