There are different spacings (and posts!) for different types of centerpulls. Paul's are much different from a DC750, for example. So figure out exactly what brake you want to use as a first step.

I know the standard for cantilever brake bosses is 80mm apart. I'm thinking about making a road frame with direct-mount bosses for center-pull brakes (u-brake style). Is there a standard post configuration for those?

The Paul website says it uses M6 bolts and the posts should be 78mm apart, which is enough info for me.

Back in the day my bmx bikes all had 990 mounts and I thought that road center pull brakes were the same as those.

990 is it's own standard from MTBs.

Paul didn't want to use the heavy 990 bosses but also didn't want to make his own bosses, so he used cantilever boss dimensions.

Road centerpulls more or less follow the Mafacs, but the mounting dimensions are model-specific and they were rarely brazed on.
