Both of my mountain bikes have vertical drop outs, so I got a Surly tensioner, 18T cog, and spacers in the mail this week. I want to try out SS MTBing as I converted my road bike for training, and like it, but haven't ever ridden SS MTB. My main bike/race bike is a 29er, and I just got a Mukluk for goofing around with and winter riding. Both are currently 1x9. I bought the parts intending to SS the Mukluk, but am having 2nd thoughts after riding some of the steeper trails around here. Is that diving too far into the deep end? If I convert my regular 29er, it is in the middle of race season for another couple months, and I'd hate to blow some races because I don't have the legs for the SS yet. Or should I just forget the idea until the end of the race season and start next year? What would you do and why?

Since no one has mentioned the Mukluk, I'm assuming that is 5 votes for converting the 29er hard tail ASAP, and 0 for the Mukluk (with the one conversion kit I have). I do think I'll wimp out though and wait until Monday (not next season at least!?!) 'cause there is a race both Saturday and Sunday, and Sundays is on the steepest MTB trail in the area.
