Thought I'd shed some light on how inferior SS's are against the gearies. This is just one racer I know about. I didn't check out all the bikes on the expert/pro classes.
March 20 was the first big race around here. I went and suffered for all my sins and beers over the winter in the SS class (12 riders). Chad (saviour machine) put his SS effort in the Expert 30-39 group.
The course favors a geared bike, because in race configuration the first four miles are practically flat and a mix of singletrack and roads/double track. The last five miles are good tight singletrack with climbing. It's a 9-mile loop and the Experts did three laps.
So Chad gets big-ringed all the way to the woods and goes into the good stuff last. He then proceeds to pick off 26 riders in his class in the following 23 miles--which of course includes the long flat spots twice more. No telling how many other racers he had to pass.
Finished second in the field of 28 by 48 seconds! Third was 2.5 minutes back.
A couple more hills might have changed things. Anyhoo, I say that's a helluva fine example of what SS'er can do with gearies. Excellent race Chad.
Only 11 riders posted better times in the three-lap races, and 9 of them were pro/semi.
And most if not all of them had more than one gear.
That's why SS.
