Sram or Saint?

2451 Views 58 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  xyeti4lifex
I just broke my rear der. today so I need to buy a new one ASAP.
Beyond Bikes has the Saint der. on sale for $80, but do I need to be running Saint hubs to run the der?
I'm running Saint breaks w/ no Saint hub, and if I recal I think I once heard that if you are running Saint components you need to run a Saint hub. Sounds silly but still don't want to get stuck with a new derailur that won't fit.
I alread have a Sram X-9 shifter that I've been running with a Suntour rear der, so my first instict was to just buy an X-9 der.
Beyond Bikes sells the X-9 but I only saw a med cage, no short cage X-9's?
And what's the diff. between the X-7 and X-9, other than price?
X-7 come in only long cage?
Price layout:
Saint - $80
X-9 - $90
X-7 - $62

What should I buy and why?

X-7 is okay, but X-9 is much better, even though there is no short cage. If you want short cage you must buy X-0 hehehe, not a deal anymore.

I would say X-9 if you dont mind the long cage too much.

X-9 has a med. or long cage.... but no short I'm finding out the more I look around.
You said x-7 is ok, but x-9 is much better, but how come?

first off, i believe you can get x7 for about 36 at pricepoint or jenson....don't pay 62.

secondly, i have a x7 on one of my bikes and it seems great for 35 bucks!. i have seen the x7 in medium cage as well. i don't think you can beat that price and i know you'll be happy.

i believe the main diff between 7 and 9 is 80 grams or so. :D

edit:

looks like prices went up...sorry. couple months ago they were 35 everywhere. i still found a medium x7 at pricepoint for cheaper.
x-9 currently has only a medium cage and a long cage. I do believe that next year SRAM will offer the x-9 in a short cage. I use a medium cage, good enough. x-7 only comes in a long cage, I think.

Word, thanks for the help.
And just so you know, I check Srams site and X-7 is only long cage.

Anyone else have anything to say about Saint?
X-7 is ruled out so it's between X-9 med. cage or Saint short cage. I know you need a 10mm thruaxle and I've got that, do you need a Saint hub though?
Can I run Saint w/ a sram X-9 shifter?
Questions, questions, quesions.....

sorry i didn't build the bike yet. but it looks cool in the red box! you won't be disappointed with the x7, either one. x9 is lighter, that is about it. if you keep searching the net or play price matching games or get a 2005 you might still be able to get the x7 for less than 40 bucks too
don't buy online from beyond bikes. I've heard one too many horror stories with their online service. If you go pick it up thats another story. No you can't run a saint rear der. with a that sram x9 shifter

Thanks, that's what I needed to know.
I'm local to Beyond Bikes so I can pick it up whenever, sad to hear they have a bad rep. for shipping, mostly all decent guys and girls willing to help out when you need it.

I stand corrected, the extra click on the derailur on Srams site is key, thanks for looking out.

Any diff. between last years models and this years with Sram?
Pricepoint has a deal on 05 X-9s for $64.98 and 06 X-9's for $85.98, and Beyond Bikes price matches. Seems like the way to go.

i seriously doubt a difference, that seems like a good deal for the 2005 x9. and yes! nada surf:thumbsup:
SRAM boy for life here! I'll never go back :nono:

I've run both x7 and x9 they both perform and hold up well , but x9 shifting does seem smoother to me
