SRAM Cranks: "MTB" vs "MTB Wide"?

6220 Views 9 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  mtbdudex
I have a SRAM GX DUB Boost crankset, and I am trying to make sense of the BB installation instructions regarding spacers.

The chart shown different spacer configurations for cranks that are "MTB" and "MTB Wide" and "Superboost".

I know I am not "superboost", but what the heck is the difference between MTB and MTB Wide?, and how do I know which I have? Part of me thinks MTB Wide would mean 148 Boost, but then why would they not just call it that?

Thanks!

I could be wrong, but maybe "MTB" here means old school 142,and "MTB Wide" is 148 boost? Unfortunately, I've been mostly on shimano and my brief experience with SRAM was all installed from factory on one of my bikes.

Sure, maybe. But maybe not. Seems odd they would use the “Superboost” terminology for 157 and not “Boost” for 148.

And are the axles on SRAM boost cranks longer than non-boost?
as far as I can tell, the "MTB Wide" is for a 55mm chainline (sometimes with standard boost spacing, but not always). wider than regular boost, but not quite superboost. Sure would be nice if SRAM's documentation laid all this out.

See the Yeti ARC, Guerrilla Gravity, and I'm sure other manufacturers who are specifying a 55mm chainline for their bikes.
I wonder what will come after super boost. Super duper boost? Double secret probation boost? By that time the bike will look more like a motorcycle without the gas engine. They will have basically horse stirups for your feet like back in the old clipped days.
Pretty sure super dooper boost is 177mm fat like the Suzi q and otso.

Hello, because I was also getting very confused about it I just wrote SRAM in their driver support SRAM Rider Support - Contact - SRAM and if that answer here doesn't help you should also just ask THEM. But I got the following answer:

"In short, Boost cranks (etched with "DUB" on the center of the spindle) are considered "MTB".

This document may be helpful for understanding the difference and identifying what you have. Particularly the chart at the top. "Wide" is a new emerging standard that we are making for some Trek, Scott, and Canyon bikes (among others) that have a 55mm chainline to allow for additional clearance at the bottom bracket for wider tires and suspension linkage. These cranks have "DUB WIDE" etched on their spindles. Even though these bikes are also built around a 148mm/Boost rear axle, a standard Boost crank will not work because the 52mm chainline doesn't provide adequate clearance."

Hope this helps!
From a SHimano perspective, the xx20 cranks are WIDE SRAM equivalent, or 55 mm chainline
