Sram Code poor modulation

1221 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  PhillipJ
My bike came with SRAM Code RS brakes. After a bleed they feel okay with decent modulation and a nicer firm lever feel. After a couple weeks I notice that the dead travel of the lever increases and then gets to the point where modulation is practically lost. Is this a trait of Code brakes?

No this isn't a trait of Codes. If anything, there is something going on. The Code lineup from SRAM has been pretty reliable over the years, a favorite brake for a lot of people.
In my experience, SRAM Code & Guide brakes don't get on with worn pads.

I have relatively new pads. I put them on with the last bleed. Brakes have about 20hrs/178 miles since last service. Looking at that chart it seems that SRAM brakes don't forward the pistons as well as Shimano to compensate for the wearing pads. I may have to manually forward the pistons.

Most newer Shimano levers above the 5xxx series overcome this problem by constantly moving the bite point on you. Since you never know how much dead travel you're going to have from one ride to the next you're forced to stop worrying about it.

Clean the pistons with some DOT fluid.
