I have 2 MTBs with sram chains and I am trying to make sure I am prepared if I have any chain problems. I ordered a few SRAM powerlock 10s...will any old chain tool work? anything else I need? The epic has a built in chain tool but I have not played around with it to see if it is what I need or not.

Most chain tools will work, but lime all tools, there are tools that will kinda do the job, and there are tools that get the job done. When buying a chain breaker, look for one where the pin on the tool that pushes the pin in the chain is not just threaded into the longer threaded part. You want it to be one piece. If they are separate, the pushing pin on the tool tends to bend/skew, and goes to crap. Did I make sense?
