Think I found the answer.

The 980 is being listed as having an alloy carrier as well, which is 5 arm. The weight difference between it at the 990 is 5 grams. One site says "different alloy carrier, only slightly heavier".

It appears only the three largest gears are on the carrier with the 980, which could be a concern for al cassette body users.

No problem. Unfortunately, for persons like myself, I'm stuck with having to get the 990 if I want to use SRAM cassettes, due to my Al freehub body.

If you have steel, perhaps a harder Ti body, you could save by running the 980.

Note: the old 990 and new 980 are not alike, as people may assume. The old 990 had the composite spider that held on more gears (can't remember how many).
