I have a SRAM 991 chain on a 1x9 set up and I have snapped the chain twice already. I have no idea what is going on the alignment is fine is just don't get it. Today it just pulled right apart, thankfully I was only about a 1/2 a mile in to my ride. The chain is only 3 months old. Is there something better out there? stronger?.

Are you shifting under load? Is the Powerlink being closed properly?

KMC X9 or Shimano XTR/DuraAce are strong and reliable. Both can be used with a Powerlink or KMC Missing Link for quick and easy removal/fitting.

i run a pc971 with no problems (1x9 at that)

36T x 11-16 and I can definitely lay down some power.

shifting under load would be my guess

Closely inspect your cassette and rings. Maybe something is worn out and causing problems. Thats my only guess.
It's not the Hollow Pin version is it? that would explain alot.
