Well I just ordered a new Scalpel and noticed that it had spider's on it, but I didn't look at the size on the demo's rear. I did notice that there wasn't much clearance, I was actually thinking of getting them swapped out when it arrives. How do you like the spiders on the Scalpel, and are they easy to Stan's?
Spider 2.1s on rear of Scalpel?
I saw pics in another thread of one guy running 2.1 UST Spiders on the rear of his Scalpel. The pics I saw showed the tire clearing the stays but without a lot of room for error. Is anyone else using this tire in the back? I have one on the front and would like to run them on both ends but I'm worried about clearance. I've run 2.1 Panaracers in back before but the Spiders run larger than the Panaracers and most others in that size.
I know that the Spiders come in a 2.0 clincher version but I want to stay with UST specific tires right now and don't want to mess with Stan's system. Also, I'm not sure if the newer composite seatstays are any different in width than the older style seatstays I have on my 2002 Scalpel. If so, that would obviously make a difference.
If push comes to shove, I could always pull my current Spider from the front and do a test fit but I'd really prefer not to unmount and remount front and rear tires if I have a choice. Besides, sometimes it takes some actual time in the saddle to decide whether the tire will work in the real world even if it looks OK in the stand.

The room for errors between seatstays and tire is enough i think. There are no scratches or any other damages on the seatstays after 400km of riding (mostly hard trails).
But the space between tire and chainstays is little bit problematic, it is only about 5-7 mm, until now there are only very little trace, that the tire has contacted the stays. But i am not sure, it is problematic to spot.
So i am not sure if i will keep this tire. Maybe i will take a Maxxis Ignitor 2.1. Has anybody experience with this tire??? I need a good tire for woody and rocky trails!!!

Well, I got bored yesterday during a rainstorm and decided to go ahead and switch out my rear tire for the Spider. At first glance, everything looked a little on the tighter side but it seemed to have plenty of clearance. I mounted a Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1 on the front and away I went to some nearby trails.
I didn't have a lot of time but I made a few small laps without any problems with the Spider. It felt nice and comfortable and I was able to run lower pressures than my 1.95 Wildgrippers without concern. The only issue I had was with the Panaracer. Man, that tire sucks in the front, especially after running the Spider for the past few weeks. I was ripping through some tight turns and the Fire just totally broke free without warning.
I went ahead and placed an order for another Spider to make a set. I'll report back as I get more miles in.

Update - Well, the Spider 2.1s are just a tad too big for the rear. I put a little Whiteout on the seatstay where the tire was closest and sure enough some of it had rubbed off because of contact after my ride. I never felt or noticed any rubbing but knowing that it is happening bugs me. I slapped a Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1 on to compare and clearance there is OK. The Fire definitely feels more sluggish after running the Spiders but grip and comfort are good. Ultimately,I'd like something with a little less rolling resistance so the quest continues.
I´m still running the spider UST on the rear of my scalpel, because i don´t know a alternative wich is 2.1 and has that grip like the spider.
But the quality of the spider is really s***. That pair of spider are my second pair (other on a F900sl) and after 600km the rear wheel has a hole, first pair had 3 holes after 500 km!!!! With my Continental Explorer UST i´, running more than 2500km and there are no holes, but the grip on woody and rocky trails and the waste is poor in comparison with the spider!!!
I don´t know which tire i should choose now???? The Spider still keeps the air for 3-5 hours of riding!!!

I'm running Spider 2.0 Air Lights and really dig them. I live in the State of Washington and it does get wet with lots of rain and mud. The Spiders have not disappointed me yet.
The treads on these tires have done great. Only 2 months of use and they still grab great.
The tires shed mud well and keep me fast on the decents. But saying that I like the tires alot more then my Panaracer Fire XC Pro UST. I've had no issues with them thus far. Great tire IMO.

If they made the Spider 2.0s in a UST, I'd definitely already be running one on the back. I'm actually thinking about trying Stan's setup with my tubeless rims just so I wont be so limited with my tire choices. t's bothering me more this year than it has in a while for some reason.
