I am thinking of getting some for 100k races consisting of 30% singletrack (some roots and rocks) and a reasonable amount of pea gravel on the fire trails. Has anybody had much experience with them? What are your thoughts on grip and durability?

Thanks.

They are a race day tire only. They are not very durable nor do they last long, but are good for racing, and have a lot of grip. I would say if you want a tire that is much more durable with plenty of grip, and very racey, look at the Maxxis Ikon. The EXC version is around 520g, or the EXO (thicker sidewall) is around 575g. I have put about 550mi. on mine in the last month, they have shown very little wear, and grip on everything! They roll fast and smooth, and don't slow you down.

Renegades are great for a race day tire, for front/rear or on the rear.
Another very good combo is the Ikon front/rear combo
or Racing Ralph front/ Ikon rear combo.
RRs have a little bit more edge knobbies which make them just a hair better for a front tire, but the Ikons work just fine.

Thanks

Thanks mate.

I'm currently running Racing Ralphs front and rear which work great in singletrack. I was mainly interested in the 120gm per tyre weight saving for the fireroads. They would be a race day only tyre...just as long as they can last 100k without puncturing every couple hours with weak sidewalls?
I haven't looked at the Ikon's so thanks for the heads up, I'll check them out.

Cheers

I looked at the SWorks yesterday.
The sidewalls are paper thin.....so unless you race where there are no rocks...
I had the SWorks Captains....sidewalls were always oozing Stans and they only lasted a couple of races before blowing out.
On the other hand...I have had great luck with Kenda Kharma 1.9's

I have been on the Renegade Controls since they came out and love them. The S-Works version is definitely a race day only tire. The control has a thicker sidewall and seems to hold up great.

I have a set of the non S-Works version. They are the Renegade Controls and they are great. I've used them on rocky, rooty, sandy, hardpack and they were awesome. Lots of grip and they are really fast. I would recommend them to anyone. I think the S-Works version is a race day only tire but the Renegade Controls you can use whenever.

The S-works is supposed to be around 450-460 gms and in a mag review of the Control version it was 544 gms.
My control version (29er obviously) weighed 510g on my scale.

I'm using it as a rear tire, and have only ridden it once so far, but I like it. Very fast, more grip than I expected. Sidewalls look tougher than the Small Block 8 I had before.

With the fast track tires the control version is a few mm wider than the s-works verions.
Is this the same with the renegade tires?
On the Specialized website it says that both the Renegade S-Works and Controls are 29x1.95. I would think that they would be exactly the same.

I have the S-Works model, they are super fast and grip really well. However they are a race day only tire. Mine will be on ebay later in the day, I would like to have something more reliable. They are 29x1.95 btw
