The BB on my 1988 Hardrock has got some lateral play in it. That is, the spindle moves up and down, not just around and around.

Is this something that can be fixed by refurbishing the old BB? I don't mind installing a sealed cartridge replacement, but does anoyone make one this size? I haven't pulled the cranks, but the spindle seems to be about 5 1/2 inches long (140mm?).

Does anyone know the exact size of the spindle? I'd like to know if I can replace it before I tear it down.

My off the cuff guess would be either a 127 or 122 mm, 73mm BB shell too. I would pull it apart, and see the condition of the cups. If they are toasty, just slap a cart bb in, they are available that length. If the cups, etc are OK, clean/repack, and adjust properly, rock and roll. If you need just a spindle, and or bearings, that should be doable, but with a little more effort. Good luck!

I just realized that the cranks on this bike are the old straight kind. That's why the spindle is so long. I need some new/old crank arms that are the more modern curved kind. Those will clear the chainstays with a shorter spindle bottom bracket.
