My old trek has seen too much abuse (ie, gears are stripped, front headset has a ton of wobble now, deraillers are out of alignment and when they are in alignment they grind gears, brakes are shot, tires are dead, grips suck, etc...). Anyways, I am going to be purchasing my first real mountain bike soon and I would like some help. I am going to be buying used most likely.

I saw an ad on ebay for a cannondale super v 500 (one that i liked: http://cgi.ebay.com/Excellent-Condi...ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting).
Yes, I know... the colors are hideous, but from what i have read it's a nice bike. Also saw one on craigslist for $500, but no picture.

I also saw the specialized big hit. Here is the link:

They both seem very similar in pricing, but I would like to know which will be a better buy for the money. I have about $1000 to spend. I already have gear (full face helmet, shin pads, etc...). I am about to go off to college at Umass Amherst if that makes a difference. I also go up to Vermont a lot too. I ride a lot of rocky fast sections currently, but would like to be able to take jumps (none too big meaning less than 10 foot drop) without worrying about breaking my bike. Thanks.

EDIT: If there are any other bikes in this price range with the same and/or better bang for the buck please post. Thanks again.

I would go with the Big Hit without looking back. I think that the Cannondale is/was not a bike designed for freeride or heavy use, while the big hit is.

Ok so i don't know why the big hit ended early. However, I saw another ad on craigslist that is super close to me. I want to now what you guys think. If I can get 800 for it would that be good? I saw a 2003 ac1 on ebay go for 576 a couple minutes ago. Is this abnormally cheap for this model? Or should i ask for that? Here's the link: http://worcester.craigslist.org/bik/737729550.html

EDIT: would the giant ac 1 be a good bike for me? Talked to the guy and he said he would do 800.
