SORBA Trail Workday- DuPont State Forest March 6th

1462 Views 21 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Woodman
We will be hosting a SORBA (Pisgah Area and UpState SORBA) trail workday in DuPont State Forest this Sunday meeting at 9AM. Meeting place is the Buck Forest (also now called the High/Triple Falls) parking area off of Staton Road. This the main entrance with the bathrooms.

Our project is doing corridor clearing work for a new trail. The trail tread work will be built as part of a mechanized trail building workshop in association with the Sustainable Trails Conference in Asheville March 13-20:
http://www.trailbuilders.org/conference/ptba_conf.html

http://www.trailbuilders.org/conference/Mechanized.html

We will be taking an under-utilized trail that few of you have ever ridden (Hilltop Trail) and making a more fun and longer replacement connecting to the Grassy Falls area. This will yield about 1 mile of new trail when completed.

Volunteers will be "swamping" behind sawyers. This means pulling all cut material out of site from the trail corridor.

Please bring the following:
-Work clothes including long pants and work gloves
-Glasses to protect your eyes
-Hearing protection (you will be close to loud chainsaws) if you have such (if not, we will provide)
-Food and water

There are several other planned trail relocations on the schedule for this year (possible SORBA projects) and if time allows we will get a jump start on those as well with corridor clearing work.

We will work from 9AM until 1PM or so, and this schedule will allow for an after work mtn bike ride.

Please let me know if there are questions.

DuPont is 100 times easier to deal with that Pisgah District, no helmets are needed for swamping (but us sawyers will be wearing them).

In fact, most FS lands I have worked on/for/with as a trail contractor or volunteer are easier to deal with than Pisgah District. I have a conference call on Friday with Deb Caffin who is trail manager for all of Region 8 (SE) for the FS, maybe I will bring that up with her.

MB,

Good luck healing that shoulder. I am almost fully recovered from my serious knee injury from last year, I don't heal as fast as I used to.

We have plenty of folks committing for the workday, we will carry on w/o you. The trail is going to be sweet, it has some long range views of Pisgah and High Falls.

Not sure if you have seen these, but here are the new rules PAS is under for trail work in Pisgah ranger district.

Yup, I seen those and got the lowdown from Chuck.
Sorry to hijack, but can we download the USFS Volunteer Agreement Form?

Is each crew limited to 15 total possible volunteers or 15 maximum volunteers per session? (if it's 15 potential, crews could be pretty slim, with people having other obligations)

I tried getting into the sorba pas site, but can't, otherwise, I'd ask this over there.
dfl please email your questions regarding pisgah work to van. his email is on the pas website if you need it.

Contact Van Rogers directly for the forms and more info [email protected] He refuses to come on MTBR.

I believe the pool of eligible volunteers will be limited to 30 (15 for ranger district & 15 for bent creek) + crew leaders + the certified sawyers. No casual volunteers. You must go through all the paperwork and be approved (2-4 week process) before you can do trail work in pisgah. So yeah if the pool is 15 and you rarely get all 15 to show up then the crews will be small. The crew leaders know this and I expect they will organize work accordingly. It's not like they had giant crews previously.

The PAS forum is no more, but you can still sign into the website and comment on any of the articles. Also there is contact info for all the board of directors And a general contact form
Thanks, David. I'll contact Van with specific concerns. I hope to see everybody out.
Hope to be there. I love giving back to Dupont. Thanks Woody.
Is this a rain or shine event? Forecast for the weekend keeps getting wetter and wetter.

Indeed very wet today. We are hoping for the rain to be done by the meeting time on Sunday. If we still have a drizzle rain, we will be working (bring good raingear). If is is raining pretty hard, not working.
Postponed till 1PM

7AM and still raining hard here is Cedar Mountain. That makes the morning work project a no-go. Weather is suppose to blow out and get better after noon. I plan to go and work this afternoon, if anyone is interested. Same meeting place (main front entrance-Buck Forest parking area) at 1PM. Join me if you can.
I'll see you at 1:00 pm if this mess blows through...
