Someone explain blackspire chainguides to me.

Specifically the dewlie.......the two ring guide although this may be an issue with the single ringers as well.

So there's a backplate, a roller and a bash guard just like every other chainguide.

But the roller has a bearing on only one side. Meaning getting the thing tight binds the roller against the backplate and whatever washers you put in there.....making it a roller that won't roll. WTF? I've been doing this bike mechanic thing long enough to include the endless mrp modifications necessary for so many years and my intuition is to call blackspire and lambast them utter stupidity. Which is why I now apeal to those of you who might have these things to lambast me for mine.

And don't fill this with "buy a drs" "get an lrp". I own the thing, it's sitting in my garage and I'm willing to bet there's just something simple I'm not seeing. Please show me that thing.

Thanks.

Buy a DRS.
I ground some of the rubber off the roller so the was more of the metal sleeve showing that backed aganst the washer and it been working fine for a couple of years

Would you mind walking me through what you've got going on? I got this thing new but the backplate had already been mounted and you could tell one of the allen heads had been used.........I may actually be missing something. I don't really care about a couple of scratches so I haven't returned it yet.

The roller gets mounted bearing side out. There's a male/ female bolt holding the thing on.....do you remember which which side the longer female bolt goes on? There were three washers, one lock-washer, one small one that looks like it's supposed to be embedded in the non-bearing side and then one more plain washer. Where do you have each?

Thanks.
Check with JimC, he had one on his Bullet.

One of the guys from Blackspire actually came by his house and set it up for him when the Dewlie first came out.

(Blackspire is located somewhere in the Vancouver area.)

Just got off the phone with someone at blackspire. There was a part missing......the metal sleeve that takes the pressure off the roller.

Thanks.

Sounds like the roller is fine. Just need that sleeve. I've got one coming in the mail.

Thanks though. I appreciate it.

I was going to say that's probably what the problem is, or you overtightened the wheel and crushed the sleeve.

IMO there is no need for any bearing with the BS rollers. The material they are made from is basically a bearing material. They'd be lighter and work just as well with no bearing.
i think blackspire makes one of the nicest, highest quality chain tensioner things out there.
i used to have the deullie on my old bullit, never lost/tost/dropped the chain.

and there was no plastic on the thing!
if you really need the "complexity" of a chainguide explaned to you, you need to go back to ballet.......
