Hi, I was reading an earlier post about someone trying to put a Gusset 1-er conversion kit onto a King hub. Shiggy said it was not good because the narrow based cog will ruin the FH.

I used the Gusset kit on a Hope Bulb disk hub, but I only used the spacers. Actually, I had to use one Shimano spacer closest to the flange, then the widest spacer (Gusset), a 16 tooth shimano cog of an old cassette, the smaller spacer (Gusset), then the Gusset lockring. Works for now with a Singleator, but will this ruin my hub? I didn't use the Gusset cogs cause they wouldn't work with the 9 spd chain I was using. Will this setup using an old Shimano cog and Gusset spacers ruin my hub?

Is the narrow base of the cog referring to the amount/width of the cog that actually makes contact w/the FH? If I do end up buying a better cog (Surly) will I still be able to use the spacers from the Gusset kit (will the Surly cog be too wide when used with the spacers) or did I just waste some money? Or will the Surly cog be wide enough in which I don't have to use the small Shimano spacer? Bottom line is, I want this too work with the Gusset spacers (if possible), get a better cog, and I don't want to ruin my Hope Bulb. Thanks in advance for any help.

Well I kept reading the other post about the narrow based cog ruining the FH and started freaking out. Took apart the Gusset spacer kit with Shimano cog, luckily there was minimal damage to the FH (looks like most of the wear was from the cassette).

So if I get a wide based cog, the Gusset spacer kit will not integrate with a wide based cog? If this is so, where can I get some cool looking spacers that you see in some of the pictures of other peoples bikes? I tried one link to Boone (I think) and it was just chainrings. Any suggestions?

You could always make one of the Gusset spacers narrower. I am not totally confident that it'd be easy to get it nice and flat, but maybe it wouldn't be too hard, if you had a decent vice? If you have to replace them anyway, you may as well have a go. Try filing/dremelling it down the same amount as the extra width of whatever wide based cog you get.

Oops, sorry, I just saw the gusset kit! I don't know if it'd work to file one down. You'd have a gap at the outer edge of the spacer, where gunge would build up, and it'd look messy. Webcyclery has spacers in silver on their website, cheap too. Good guys to boot.

Your LBS likely has a box of different width aluminum spacers.....mine does.

Get a Boone, King, Surly or Endless cog (the last 2 are the widest) and use PVC pipe to make the spacers.

That works real well and it's cheap.

Expandable spacers

Rennen makes the best expandable spacer thing on earth! I got one at the worlds last Aug. from the Rennen guys! There is nothing like it. They are reversed threaded and you can adjust them to fit any cog witdth.

I think they go for about 30.00, if your not wanting to spend it, go for the PVC!

If you go to the Boone site it looks like they only make/sell chainrings but click on the Ordering button on the bottom and you will see they sell cogs and spacers, too.

it appears that wtb has jumped in to the wide based cog market, you can notice their cog on the "single duty" hub in the interbike section or you can just look at this auction, according to BTI-usa, the cogs are forged steel and come in 16, 17 and 20t sizes...
