With a failure like that I can pretty much guarantee you that he had a stress crack in his fork for quite a while ahead of time and deliberately did nothing about it. A buddy of mine cracked the upper on his Shiver, after he rode it for three years without maintenance, after getting it used. And he though that dropping 11 stairs to flat was cool.
