Smash vs Stumpjumper Evo?

4167 Views 18 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  TheNatureBoy
I have a Smash but I keep eyeing these stumpjumper evos. I wouldn't mind a touch more travel (or a lot more with the cascade link), a little longer chainstays and ~1.5lbs lighter.
Pretty similar bikes on paper.
Anyone ridden the two?

The Smash has been a great bike! But here's what I'd like to change, for me:
  • The suspension gets a little overwhelmed on repeated medium sized hits, ex big chunky rock chutes. I think a little more travel or more linear travel may help
  • I'm tall (s4 gg/s5 specialized), and it feels like I'm off the back of the bike in steep corners. I think longer chainstays would help.
  • I weighed my bike recently and was shocked it's almost 36lbs with coil shock now. It definitely feels a bit sluggish on long climbs. I think a lighter frame would help.

If you’re wanting to stay on a coil shock, I would not purchase into the SJ/SJ Evo/Levo lines, they are known to cause too much lateral flex that breaks the pistons on coil shocks. I have a regular ‘19 SJ and it just destroyed my Mara Pro air shock after being installed for 10 months on the bike. My SJ is a fantastic bike, and the SJ Evo sounds even better, but I’ve decided that I don’t want to purchase new shocks every year. I was looking at the Smash or Gnarvana, so your input on the Smash helps me as well. I also like what I’ve seen on the Canfield Lithium. If you’re willing to look at alloy, it’s an enduro bike that climbs like an XC bike. If you want to stay carbon, then Revel bikes licensed the CBF system from Canfield, with a slight difference in the set-up to allow a water bottle to fit inside the frame.

Edit: From what I’ve been able to tell, the Cascade Link only adds around 5-7mm of travel, but it also voids the frame’s warranty. So don’t tell Specialized you use one if you go that route.

I would also add the Tilt or the Lithium to your list of bikes.

Don't get me wrong, the smash is a fantastic bike, I love it. I don't think it gets overwhelmed more than any other 145mm bike would. For 90% of my riding the "cons" I listed aren't an issue.

The Canfields look sick. Chainstays too short for what I want to try though.

I very well may just end up turning my Smash into a Gnarvana, because that would solve my travel and chainstay length points, AND it would be the easiest and cheapest way to accomplish this. Just get the stay kit, a new shock and a longer air spring for my lyrik. Not having to deal with selling my old bike/frame, big bonus!

I am having this same issue, except don’t have either one and am trying to decide between the two….big advantage with the specialized is that I can go test ride both the S5 and S6 to help me decide.

The Canfields ARE sick. :) I can tell you after being on a Megatrail and a Shred Dogg that the Canfields (specifically the Tilt and Lithium) do not feel short at all. The Balance feels short until you get used to it.

I will tell you the Smash and Tilt are both very solid bikes, and you can’t go wrong either either.

What did you end up doing ?
I’m looking @ smash v stj v Hightower
@510 reach I’m surprised the smash felt like you need more ?

I ended up converting the smash to a gnarvana. I didn't want more reach, I wanted longer chainstays and more travel. Definitely liking the Gnarvana chainstays on the S4 revved frame, feels more balanced for sure. The only drawback for me is super tight corners. The gnarvana suspension feels much more forgiving on big drops and hits, but not as monster-trucky over fast medium chunk as I expected - which is probably a good thing for people using it as their only bike - keeps it lively feeling on more tame trails. The gnarvana climbs decently also, barely worse than the smash I'd say. Neither the smash or the gnarvana are excellent climbers IMO. The trail pistol is.

Still interested in trying a SJ evo eventually, the S5 evo has pretty similar geo to the s4 gnarvana.

Great feedback- love the look of the GG the fact they’re American too .
@ 6 “5 “ long legged the s4 concerns me tho.
I like that Evo too - s6 tho .
Also specialized gives you a good build kit.

Just on a S4 Smash from a Large Alu Smash. At 6’3” I’m coming to terms with my human size and wants when picking up a new frame were “some reach” and longer stays — Prime or Titan were also on the list, maybe doing a better job answering those requests. Then a perfect all black Smash S4 came around used and couldn’t resist, love the GG story and it’s the only carbon bike I’d want to own.

Have a few first rides on the Smash 4 now and not feeling the need for the long stays ASAP, buttt… since you did this swap I’m wondering if you can provide a lil more juicy detail on the fit and ride differences you noted? Did the stays create a notable ride change or more minor?
This would be a down the road swap for me so having a better take on what real changes if brought from your POV would be helpful!
Cheers!

I'm about the same height. It's not a night and day difference tbh, but you notice if you're paying attention for it. I mostly notice the benefit on steep terrain, especially steep turns, where before it felt like I was behind the bike, not in the bike. When long people like us do a proper hip hinge to get into attack position, that naturally puts our butt (and center of gravity) a lot further back than most frames are designed for. Longer reach is great for the front half of the equation, longer chain stays fix the rear end. My next frame will be from a manufacturer doing size specific stays.

Really the only downside for me is fitting through very tight switchbacks, so I recommend the swap if you can.

Which manufacturers do size specific stays? I’m intrigued.
Quite a few now, others are doing something like one size stays for s, m, large, and longer stays for xl and XXL.

Off the top of my head: Norco, transition, specialized

I'm 6'2 and run the s4 in short mode, so I bet in long it'd be good for you. Check out the xl transition spire too.

Thanks!

The clean used frame meant some $ to play with Gnar stays. And noting that also drops some reach in the process, got close to Prime/Titan ° Also meant a new Hazard because it’s fun to try to keep it NA based 🤷‍♂️
The reach/stability feels amazing, in long with 51 offset, but I’m still getting to know it and emerging from a few year COVID / dad bod ride lull. Figure get to know it as a Smash before switching to Gnar stays. Tease out the experience… Ha!
