anyone has any information about potential of smartweld in epics? - e.g. will it be introduced in '15? any estimation of the benefits? How close would the smartweld alu bikes be to the carbon bikes w.r.t. weight?

it seems epics would be even better application for the technology than the road bikes (any remaining harshness of the ride vs. carbon would be taken out by the shocks while the durability of the alu would be a much more significant advantage on mtb than on the road).
any info/input would be greatly appreciated.

It honestly sounds more like a cost saving feature that allows them to make complex shapes in aluminum without making the frame crazy expensive. The reason it makes it more compliant is because the complex shapes are possible, not the weld itself. In a full suspension frame "harshness" of a ride is a completely different thing than on a road bike where you're dealing with high frequency vibration (the type of thing that aluminum feels horrible on and carbon mutes out).
