Hey all-

Since I've been here, this has been the fastest way to get info about the Forest. Thanks!

Does anyone know what they're building at BC below the dam? I was creeking with my two sons today, and they asked, and I have no idea. On a similar note, are the big concrete basins just upstream part of an old fish hatchery? were they used to catch sediment from the lake? Enquiring 4 and 6 year old minds want to know.

They are building a new waste water treatment plant for the campground. There are some stone channels down stream from the dam, but I'm not sure about what you're referring to being upstream. The lake bottom catches most of the sediment, that's why they dredge it on occasion. There are some remnants of an old hatchery, but they are way upstream from the lake.
I meant upstream from the new construction, below the dam. Thanks!

EEwww..... makes me think twice about playing in the creek with my kids, and jumping in there after a ride.:eekster:
Yeah, personally, I wouldn't get in that water any where except upstream of the lake. And that includes the lake. Nasty!
Are you Tim the horse vet Tim?

No, actually I'm Tim the dog, cat, lizard, snake, bird vet Tim.
Why are people so afraid to swim in/around the lake? I imagine the treatment plant water is probably cleaner than some of the other streams in the area!
I ain't skeered. I swam in the lake last weekend with the kids. The place was packed with people swiming and having a great time. The lake looks very healthy. Fish, geese, snaping turtles, frogs, etc... Aquatic life is much more sensitive to polution. I don't think there is anything wrong with the lake. Heck it's the ******* Riviera.
my dog enjoyed a nice long drink from the creek just below the damn. oh, wait...he really likes the taste of ....nevermind....

The problem with the lake is the Geese. Think Fecal Coliform. They poop lots and often. And no, the water below the treatment facility is not cleaner than say, above the lake. That's just silly to say. With that logic section nine of the French Broad would be cleaner than the Upper North Fork. It's not.

Well it's not so much pollution, at least not industrial, as it is Goose poo. The lake has been closed because of it in the past. And some Aquatic life thrives in $hitty conditions, some doesn't. My dog gets in to chase the Geese, but that's it for our family. We do like to play in the creek upstream from the lake. To each his own I guess.
