Hey guys, I was hoping to get your opinion on whether or not I should buy a roof rack for my Jetta tdi wagon. I have a road and mountain bike that I ride on a weekly basis, and have just been folding down the back seats and throwing it in the back. Its been working out ok but the mud from the tires makes the inside dirty, and having to constantly fold both back seats down, take a wheel off, then put the bike in hasent been my favorite thing to do. Ive been looking into a whispbar s44 system and a rocky mounts tie down roof rack system, both of which have gotten great reviews for fuel mileage, durability, and noise. I also want to stay away from trunk mounted racks completly. Should I just dive in on the roof rack, or just keep doing what I have been? Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

I didn't have a rack for years. I just did what you did and folded the seats down on my Jetta and later Altima. I like having a rack. I've since gotten a new bike and fits but it is kind of a hassle to get it in and out. I like having a rack because it is easier to tote the bike around. I can ride with multiple people and we all fit in one car. The downside is you can run it into garage. I also like the security of having my bike inside the car if I go to the store or something. I really don't like leaving my bike on the car unattended even with a locking rack.

Look at craigslist. I got a thule rack and two rails for $200. I had to get the fit kit for another $75. With the locks I think that setup would cost nearly $700
