SAN DIEGO -- The high-top sneakers cost $215 at a San Diego boutique, but the designer is giving them away to migrants before they cross to the United States.
These are no ordinary shoes.
A compass and flashlight dangle from one shoelace. The pocket in the tongue is for money or pain relievers. A rough map of the border region is printed on a removable insole.
They are red, white and green, the colors of the Mexican flag. On the back ankle, a drawing of Mexico's patron saint of migrants.
Their designer is 38-year-old Judi Werthein, an Argentine artist who moved to New York in 1997 -- legally, she notes.
The shoes -- named Brinco, or Spanish for "Jump" -- were introduced at inSite, an art exhibition in San Diego and Tijuana whose sponsors include nonprofit foundations and private collectors

Imagine putting on "brand new" shoes and then trying to hike miles and miles.......
Blister City...... Once across the border, next stop, emergency room for near fatal blisters from the "new" shoes.
Secondly, once these became popular, anyone you see near the border with these on, might as well be wearing a sign saying "I'm illegal".......
Perhaps they could be given something a bit less conspicuous, like Brooks Brothers suits.
But if this woman goes ahead, I hope she has liability insurance for the inevitable law suits filed by some "illegal" immigrants rights group, suing on behalf of the 147 border crossers who suffered great physical harm and humiliation from wearing her product.
I'd say they could settle out of court for about $12,500 per "victim"
