Depends on the level of protection needed/desired.
These look ideal to me, but may not offer enough lower protection for some.
I have the Fox knee and shin guards and like them. Mike is right that they don't cover the entire lower shin, but I think they cover most of what tends to get whacked. I don't like them too much when its really hot out, but what can you do. Anyway, I would buy them again...

I saw some new 7idp combo knee/shin pads at Outerbike, they looked pretty nice, medium level protection. no idea when they’ll be released. I’m waiting for these.

There was a new shin/knee combo pad by a French company, Racer, they are direct order so buyer beware if you need a return.

G Form has a new combo pad called the Pro Rugged, it looks better than they’re old stuff, but I’ve not see in in vivo. My daughter is getting a set.

I ordered some G Form Pro Rugged Knee/Shin Protection in an XL, I'm six foot 195# with biker thighs/calves, the fit was fair at the knee and calf, loose above the ankle, might be able to size down to a Large, but the fabric bunching behind the knees is a no go.

Otherwise quality is far better than the old G Form pads.

I recently ordered the same and the protection is good, but there's tightness behind the knee. I'm hoping it'll relax a bit after pedaling. I'm afraid if I buy an XL then it'll be loose on the calves and ankles. Can't have it all?
