Which of the two is more reliable? I've heard of a lot of problems with some of the newer shimano freehubs. I'm building up another bike to do some touring, so reliability is the primary concern.

I have a NOS set of 750, and can get some 770's for less than $100. XTR 970's can be had for close to $200, but that is a bit more than I want to spend on this bike. Any other hubsets in that price range I should be looking at instead?

Well if you want to use center lock only rotors then the 770 would be the choice. The 750 and 760 are six bolt only I believe. As far as engagement the 770 might be a little better and I believe the seals might be a little better. The hub overall uses the same loose ball bearing design Shimano uses.

If you want to try something different you could look at the Hope Pro II. They are bit more then the XT but you are getting a bit more hub in my opinion.
