shimano brake lever compatibility

I got a rocky mountain bike with the MT4100 2 piston brakes (I thought they were the deore, but I guess an even lower level). they really suck. little power. no reach adjustment (as far as I can tell), no servowave. instead of buying a whole new brake system can I just buy a new lever? looks like for around 50 dollars can get an xt (or similar lever) that has the servowave and reach adjustment and better lever. I assume the caliper part is fine, not really the big problem?

thanks for the advice!

You can.
Additional things to consider that will help improve performance (if not already optimized):
  • Metallic pads
  • Larger rotors

+1 on the larger rotor suggestion. This makes a bigger difference than I expected.
Had these breaks on a couple of bikes. You can do a straight swap for 12 speed (M7100, M8100) levers. There are more levers that fit, but these are easy to find at the moment. You then get all the lever adjustment, single finger breaking etc...

The swap is simple, just undo the nut, pull the hose out of the lever, snap the hose into the new lever and tighten up the nut. Give it a bleed and it will all be good.

If the rotors are resin only, upgrade these and get some metallic pads and it will be golden!

The 2 piston callipers you have are fairly similar to the M6100 callipers.

I’ve had 2 piston xt brakes before. No problems. So I think I’ll just buy a new lever and try. Can’t believe a 4K bike comes with such shite. Thanks all!
Side note: Until you get the new levers you can adjust the reach with an Allen key:-

Shimano…I love my 8020 and 8120 wandering bite points! 🙈🙄 My next $$ is going to Code RSC. Made the Shitmano mistake twice.

not to start a whole sram/shimano debate. but, Ive had sram brakes before that felt great when they worked, but seemed to need to be bled all the time and generally more of a pain. the shimano stuff just works for yrs even if you are lazy about maintenance. but, maybe the newer stuff is better....
