I opened the reservoir of my new SLX brakes and found the fluid to be clear. I thought it was supposed to be tinted red??

Is this normal? They were purchased as "OEM" from a local shop.

Yes, the reservoir is full in the pic.

It is supposed to be tinted red, but when you are looking through only a millimeter of it it can appear clear. Also, some different branded mineral oils are different color, Magura for example has blue tinted mineral oil. In its natural state mineral oil is clear so it is also possible that the mineral oil in your brakes is not shimano branded. However, it is not necessary to have shimano branded mineral oil.

Can I ask why you opened the reservior of a new set of breaks? And just as jmeldrum26 state. The red tint is added by Shimano, either there is such a thin amount that you can't see against the metal background, or it is not shimano branded mineral oil. Either way if you need to bleed them you can pick up a bottle of the good old pink stuff.
