Alright here's the situation. You like doing drops, riding around for fun, trail riding, etc. You basically like to do as much as you can. Now, you're goin for an upgrade, THE SHIFTERS. Do you go with the twist, I've had them before and they were coo, or do you stick with the thumb ones that have been coo too? Muchos gracious.

Oh yeah, and if you go for an upgrade to either style, any brands you'd recommend?

SRAM X.0 shifters.

It's gonna be hard to get some of the Shimano stuff, not sure about shifters but, there is a "shortage" of some Shimano components. SRAM IMO is good because I can grab 6-7 gears in a quick twist. Up or down. :D Good Luck with your choice.

id say NO twists.... i tried someones, and always ended up twistin when i tried to hop... etc... it just takes up space on the bars. if you like to manipulate the bars a lot, then they probably arent the best bet...but im sure ud get used to them anyway. I like the trigger shifters... with a low-normal der. i find it works the best for me.

These things frickin' rule. I miss them ever since I got rid of my 1989 Performance Tangent a dozen years ago.

I've ridden both and always found the thumb shifters to be far superior. I'd always shift gears doing trials riding or dirt jumps with the twist shifter. They are fine for XC or pavement riding, but are in an awkward position for anything more gnar. The people that say they can shift multiple gears with a twist shift, you can do that with thumb shifters too if you push them a little further in. I'd go with Shimano just because I have had 4 of my friends break their SRAM derailleurs in the past few years and my shimano derailleur still seems to work...

(...and for those retro folks...go STX-RC)

twist left, trigger right

My favorite rear shifter is a trigger, favorite front is a twister. Norco specs some of their bikes this way. The problem I've had with twisters, is that I've almost broken my wrist landing big drops and having the twister rotate. So now I run full-length grips with the left twister mounted on the other side of the brake lever (between the brake lever and stem). If you run a 2-ring system up front, triggers won't work well because you'll have mad chain-rubbing-front-derailleur in about half your gear combos. But you need a really wide bar to have room for this (Raceface Diabolus and Funn Kilo both work).
