Shifter trouble, help?

Hi all,

My bike has been sitting in the garage for a few months, and when i went to ride it recently, the trigger shifter for the rear der. would shift precisely going toward the smaller cogs, but going towards the larger cogs the lever would only clic if pressed way past where it goes for triple shifts.

I have an xt rear, with lx rapid rise shifters, it used to shift correctly, one short click went one cog, two clicks for two and all the way for three, now it's on and off. There are some times where the lever 'catches' and it does a nice short click and downshift, then it won't do anything if i go beyond where it should shift three cogs. If i rapidly tap the shifter without fully pushing it, it randomly catches right away, and then does nothing on successive taps, what could be causing this. I haven't even ridden it in like 6 months and it worked fine then?

Basically ther lever will sometimes go as far as it can without down shifting, and then work fine, but it's hit and miss, and up shifting (going toward the smaller cogs) is fine all the time.

Thanks for the help!

I've had the same problem with LX shifters before too. What worked best for me, as suggested by someone from around here, was to put a few drops of chain lube in the shifter assembly. I removed the little plastic screw that covers the cable insertion port and squirted in a reasonably liberal amount of Boeshield (a chain lube). After working the shifter through its full range a few times, everything seemed to be back to normal.

Hope it helps, good luck
