Not really my experience (yes, I noticed the sarcasm).
They actually slide along the cable, kind of wiping it (though not completely) but actually leting get in quite a good amount of dirt and adding friction meanwhile.They are a good example of the twisted compromise between a good seal and no friction. Gore boots are true seals. They fit tight at both ends (virtually waterproof) and since they contract and expand there is no friction of cables sliding through a tight rubber. Never liked the shimanos in terms of seals.
