I've had my much loved Deore Shadow R.D. for about 3 months now, and its fantastic. However, I do remember when I first got it that it was a total PITA to adjust. Only having one cable spot, and the screws and all. I got it working pretty smooth, except on the rare occasions that it didn't catch the highest gear.

I am going to be tuning the bike up soon, and wanted some advice on tuning it. I know the basic premise, but I was wondering if anyone has any tips in particular on the shadow R.D.? I am still wondering if maybe my R.D. hanger is bent. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to ever get it to perfectly align. Is that normal?

Sounds like the hangar is bent, the park tool works well and will pay for itself in the long run.

I run the same R.D, no problems at all with higher gears, i'm with agabriel on checking your hanger.. shifting should be super smooth

I work in a bike shop's workshop so I fiddle with gears all day long.

Shadows are a real pain in the ass to adjust. Saying that, I've just bought one.
