does anyone ever ride Sabarum park off old fullerton road? well if you do, does anyone know of a good route to take, something a little more exciting then the one i do which is: i enter off old fullerton road, go down the little hill then back up, once i get to the fork of, either up the fire road or down to the horse stables area, i go up the fire road to the left towords the power lines, rid up to the gravel road gate and then turn right to continue up to the power station, once i get almost there i take the right and go along the ridgeline, and then take the double track (the one with all the hikers wearing the welding masks pictured below) and that takes you down to the shabarum park parking lot with the hoarse stables. than i climb back up to fullerton road. DOES ANYONE KNOW A MORE EXCITING ROUTE? tthis one is ok but i want to hit more single track and stuff, does anyone know of any? im an ok climber (i have an intense spider which does most the work for me ) and i love going down. any new routes would help
thanks

If you want to hit more singletrack, you can go down a few freeway exits to Whittier.

Head west on the 60 freeway.
Exit Seventh Ave. At the exit, make two consecutive left turns to head south on Seventh Ave.
Drive on Seventh Ave. until you can no longer go south (because it hits a T-intersection). Make a right turn on E Orange Grove Ave. (head west).
Drive to the end of that street and you should be at a fenced cul-de-sac in which you can see dirt and brush, and a landfill in the distance.

Enter fence through hiker/biker access gap. Head left (south). You will be on a partially paved road. Look for the split in the dirt road to take you slightly uphill on your right side. Go that way and you will be at a little clearing, which has singletrack entrances at either end. Take the one on the south end.

This wide (>3') singletrack will roll around at first, but then go into a series of climbing switchbacks (steep at times, smooth and compact soil) to take you up to an old horse tie-down. It is also a T-intersection. Take the right turn and the singletrack will roll again (compact soil with embedded rocks), but then climb to a T-intersection in the vincinity of a vehicle gate. Don't bother with the gate (but remember it) and just turn left from where you came from to ride on the wide singletrack along the fenceline (compact soil). On the other side of the fence is a fireroad known as Skyline Dr. (fireroad). Soon this straight, wide singetrack will veer sharply to the right through a gap in the fence, and direct you across the dirt road, and down another singletrack.

You will descend along a wide singletrack that turns into downhill switchbacks. The switchbacks are easy, but you should watch out for gaping ruts. There is another path (probably bootleg) that cuts straight down the gradual descent. There is a bit more technical challenge there. As soon as the descent ends, you will be at another T-intersection. Turn left and you will head up a singletrack. It will drop you off right onto Turnbull Canyon Rd.

Head left (east?) on Turnbull Canyon Rd. and you will hit a T-intersection with Skyline Dr. (street). Turn left onto Skyline Dr. (street) and be sure to turn left again at the next T-intersection, which keeps you on Skyline Dr. (street). You will soon find another vehicle gate, beyond which is Skyline Dr. (fireroad). Keep going and you will soon find yourself back at the gate at the top of the first climb. You can go through the gate and head down the same singletrack and switchbacks you originally ascended.

This is a pretty short (less than an hour?) after-work ride and low on the technical challenge side (here I prefer to ride a hardtail shod with semi-slicks), but it is a nearby getaway and allows you to work those climbing legs a little bit.

There is actually a whole network of trails in that area, but I don't know the other paths well enough to write a set of directions for.

Have you trried using Google Earth (satellite view) to look for any new possible trails?
I've always ridden the same loop you've described. I grew up pretty close to Blandford & Pathfinder and grew up hiking and riding those trails. I've never found anything on the Schabarum side, only on the Powder Canyon side (near Fullerton) but every time I tried to ride any smaller trails that would spring up I'd get about 20 thorns in each tire. It's been a while since I've riden there regularly, but I've heard you can ride dirt all the way to Whittier now.
After you get to the horse stables in Schabarum Park, hang a right up the fireroad, heading back to Fullerton road, about 1/2 mile you will see a trail on the left side. Take these switchbacks up and over the hill, crossing a small paved road till you get to Pathfinder, hang a right at the bottom and another right at the street and you will end up at the Water District, take a right, past the offices, and grind up the short but steep hill, keeping left at the "T" almost at the top, then at a right hand turn, at the apex of the turn you will see a singletrack on the left, take this, keeping left, go up, go down, the steps, stay left then enjoy the fast downhill singletrack to the horse stables in Powder Canyon.
My fingers hurt from the typing.
Stay on the trails. When the horses ride again, they will build more singletrack.....
ok that sounds good but wherre are the horse stables in powder canyon? like i know where the ones are in shabarum. and the switchback you talked about, is it the one on left with the sign by it when climbing the fireroad back up to Fullerton road?and wheres the water district???
i can show you a good loop

just tell me when man, i can show you good loop on the weekends. its only 9 miles, but its 3 good climbs.

haha, i love the pic with the sun shade things, they are crazy. My friends mother wears one, we call it a welders mask. haha.
The sign, as you have seen, is the place to go up. There are 3 opprotunities for singletrack off the switchbacks.
The Water District is at Pathfinder and Harbor/Fullerton road.
Powder Canyon is the first and the second gated fireroads as you go right, the only way off Harbor/Fullerton, up "old Fullerton road" The second is where you will see the horse arena/staging area.
Then when you feel up to it try the "chicken run" downhill singletrack.
There are miles of singletrack there, if you look and explore.
Don't forget the area between Harbor and the 57 freeway south of Pathfinder aka "Nike Base" abandoned.
?

where is the abandoned nike thing?
well i am going tomorrow moarning to try so new stuff, but i might go saturday as well, hey does anyone have any pics of schabarum????
how do you get to the nike base????

There are a few ways to get there.
One way is go south on Harbor/Fullerton road from the Water District maybe 2 miles (up and over the top) you will see a flat field on the left side and a paved road that goes straight up. You can take that abandoned road past the guard tower and you will end up at the base, or you can take the valley trail at the northern most part of the same flat field, work your way thru the canyon and up to the top of the ridge then connect with the road to the base. OR you gan go east on pathfinder to Bill Blevins park, head to the back of the park, climb (if you can) the singletrack to the left till you get to a fence. Hop over that. If you take a Left and go along the fenceline you will hit one of the shortest but sweetest banked singletrack in the area (if not continue up the road) This will take you to the water catch basin, next to Bill Blevins Park, See the fireroad to the right , take it up to the wilderness. There are natural springs in the area.
Explore this area and you will see some halftrack from the cows going all over the place.
From this point you can connect to the Boy Scout Camp then on to Chino Hills/Carbon Canyon.

Whoa there, last I checked that whole area is private property. Back in the day, if the rancher caught you up there, you'd get shot at w/ rock salt. Not that I'd know from experience or anything ;) There's not much to see at the Nike missile site, just a couple of the underground strucures and one small guard shack were all that were there last time I was up there, several years ago. Locals also might be able to you about the underground structure that used to be at Nogales and Pathfinder which they demolished in about '86 with a loud bang. It was rumored to be a factory of some kind, but I'm pretty sure it was one of the missile sites related to the Nike base.
Seriously, check into ownership on that land, it used to be Shell Oil and they leased it to the rancher. I haven't heard of anything changing.
Area (sp) oil owns it.
There's 3,600 homes going up on that property.
The old rancher is no problem, if you are nice.
I've had no problem with him.
