Settled: the dropper post issue

3990 Views 57 Replies 34 Participants Last post by  SteveF
From "It's the best thing to happen to mountain bikes" to "I don't need one," opinions on the dropper post are all over the board. Well here's a quote from a source that most of us consider reputable: MTBR itself.

"In our opinion, the dropper seatpost is the most important innovation in the history of mountain biking. It allows riders to lower their center of gravity when cornering and descending and gives new riders added confidence." (Link to source post.)

So let's have no more argument on this issue -- consider it settled. Dropper posts are BEST EVAR! And if you're not running one, well, you probably need a new girlfriend, too.

I have no argument with this post. I would give up suspension before I gave up my 180mm dropper.

i'd rather have a full suspension bike without a dropper than a rigid bike with a dropper.
i'd rather have a bike with tubeless tires and no dropper than a bike with inner tubes and a dropper.
i'd rather have a bike with some sort of chain retention and no dropper than a bike without chain retention and a dropper.

i love my dropper post, but i also equally love flying thru the chunk and not having to worry about dropped chains or pinch flats.

You guys know you could lower the seat before droppers, right? They should be called risers, that is where the action is.

I challenge anyone here to a race. I'll ride without a dropper, and you with a dropper.
Race track venue and time is of my choosing. And I get to decide what bike you can ride and how fast you can ride it.
Oh, and you have to sit down on all sections, you cannot stand up.
Lastly, you have to ride blind folded and with one leg.

A new girlfriend implies the existence of an old girlfriend. Thus, in my case, your argument is invalid.

I'll come back to this tomorrow, and read this.. go find some wheel size threads to look at, then go hit woodworking boards and read some sharpening threads.

I've read the forum posts on this website. You think I am going to trust a review coming from the same place?

Ugh, seriously. Those threads get so old so fast, because 29 is clearly the correct answer and people STILL argue.

My legs are too long for that.

too long to descend and/or corner? man, that really sucks...

Pedal up. Even our biggest down has a lot of climbing. Welcome to Arizona.

who was talking about climbing?

I can't descend without climbing.

Might could be why I consider a dropper essential ;)

I use one of those straps that old barbers used to use on their straight edges. Don’t tell anyone.
I know I wouldn't be caught dead riding without my hite-rite

I'd give up my dropper before I gave up my disk brakes. Suspension and droppers are a nice addition to a mountain bike but you can ride safely and competently without them and have fun. Disks though, that is a deal breaker for me.
