I own an 06 FSR XC Comp and noticed that the black plastic shim between my seat clamp is cracking I guess during adjustments I may have overtightend it anyhow the bike shop says I need to buy a new seat clamp anyone have advice can I remove this piece and clamp metal to metal thanks.

Are you sure the clamp is creaking? It probably is just the seatpost against the frame which can be easily solved by greasing it lightly.

That clamp needs that bushing. But the bushing can't support the force needed to close it and keep it tight, thats the catch22. Most stock clamps suck. At least every one i have had did. I just bought a new bike in September and the first thing I needed to replace was the qr seat clamp.

Hope/Salsa make quality clamps. Install and forget for life.

Oh sorry, didn't read the original post too well...and you're right in that case crease prevents a lot of squealing :)
