I have been running the Chimano M960 cranks for almost 2 years now without any attention or service to the bearings. Should I change them strictly as preventative maintenance? I've heard of a Phil Wood version of the bearings too, I think? No problems so far, just wondering how long they generally last.

The shimano bearings should still be fine. Its probably a good idea to give them a relubing to be on the safe side but there's no need to change the bearings if you're not having problems with them. Its pretty easy to tell when its time because I've noticed they usually start sqeaking when they go dry. I've had a set of 960's for 3+ years and they are still rolling good as new.
