Anybody familiar with mountain biking options near the Sand Dunes? I'm planning a family trip down there towards the end of May. Wondering if I should bring the bike?

Hmmm... There is a 4x4 route over the mountains there, no idea what it's like. There is some riding north of there near Salida, but that's a ways away.

the 4x4 trail is just that.....

a 4x4 trail, its called Medano pass and is very nice, specially in the fall. riding near the dunes woud be murder on the sand, very soft, very deep, but once you head north up the 4by trail you leave the sand and hit regular colorado "dirt".

dont know of any mtbing near the dunes, and you definietly cannot ride ON the dunes (bring some skis or an old snowboard.)

if you have a decent 4x4, you can take medano up and over from rt 69 S out of west cilff. very nice drive, and ive doen it in a stock cherokee sport, wtih half gone tires. also, to get to the closest part of the dunes where you dont have to hike a half mile acorss the packed level section to even get ot the dunes, you can take a 4x4 up that road past the main area and it gets pretty close to the dunes ont he east side. again, 4x4 required!!!! mtb waaaaayyy too soft of sand.

but hey, the pass is prpobably snowed in right now, not sure,

if you need directions to the east side of medano off 69, lemme know
