Not sure this is the right forum but I'll try: I'm building up an '04 Salsa Ala Carte with its rigid fork and discs. I want to try it as a 1x9. Can I use my XT 750 crankset removing the small and large chainrings and then using my XTR 12 32 cassette and XTR 952 rear derailleur? Thanks!

Yes. Lose the front derailleur, install a bash ring and a device to keep the chain from falling to the inside, and you're set.

And shorten the chain

If you're building from scratch a 1x8 might be a better way to go, and look for a chain ring with no ramps/pins - some DH rings are like this - if you get good tension in the chain you might get away with no chain retention devices.
