BLM Camping

There is some BLM land right above Buena Vista you might be interested in. It is in close proximity to the Midland trail. To get there take 285 out of Denver. About a mile from Johnson Village there is a scenic overlook on the right with some toilets and a picnic area. Turn into this area but continue past the facilities along the road. After about a mile and a half you will come to the Midland trail parking area. Take a right. (if you go to the left here you will end up overlooking Buena Vista. Turn around!). Follow the road and go left where it appears to dead end into the trail. There are several existing spots along the road from here. There is some atv traffic along the road occasionally but otherwise a nice spot.. Not very close to Salida but this has always been a reliable place for me.

Planning on heading down this weekend and I am sure everything is reserved already. Anyone got any tips or out of the way locales? Prefer close proximity to some moderate trails.
mtber36's advice sounds good, that is a pretty place to be.
I would call my buddies at Absolute Bikes (719) 539 9295 and ask ANY of them on their advice. You could ask for Shawn Gillis and tell him I sent you there, he can set you on the right track whatever your plans. The whole store is great really, they got time on their hands and love to help wherever they can!!
Enjoy!!

Kind of a "We're on a mission from God" moment.
...Out of the concrete darkness and into the natural light...out of the hustle of the city and into the trees and flowing hills of the Monarch Crest...Away from corporate america and off to see the legand of Don McLung...you and the bike...one with the vacant trails unlike the crowded mass of the Front Range...Oh yea baby, WE ARE ALL ON A MISSION...What's your mission going to consist of today?!
Well all that crap and Absolute is one of my favorite weekend churches!!

Oh, we have time on our hands do we? Sounds like you weren't around the shop this afternoon. Sheesh. ;)

Seriously, there are many many places to camp around here. Depends on how close to town you want to be, how close to trails, which trails, how high-clearance your vehicle is, etc.

Call the shop for advice. We'll give you some for free, and it'll be worth every penny!

Tom, ask him when he had the time to pen that wisecrack.

Ed and Tom, ha ha ha, I meant that differently, I meant you guys like nothing more than to help out at Absolute!! And I was the one not working when I made that crack while you guys were busy at the shop...blah blah blah  ...So how is it up there Tom (seemed like Leadville was pretty dry last weekend)?? Missing the fourth ride but hope to hook up with you and/or Ed again soon!!

Well unfortunately no epics planned as we will have the 4yr old in tow. He only goes so far on a trail before he gets tired of me pedalling so slow. We are looking for some low key rides with good scenery. Probably take him fishing as well. Generally just relax. Far cry from my Firecracker 50 aspirations of a few weeks ago.

btw: best of luck out there on the 4th. I think you need to do it solo on the fully rigid SS.

Um...NOPE...that's what I should do, it just doesn't sound as fun as the ONE LAP I'm gonna do!! When you get to Salida go into the shop (Absolute) and tell Tom to get to work!! Then go to Evergreen and tell Ed he needs to go to Salida...you know to help Tom and all...sheesh. :ciappa:
Then when they are done beating you because you know me tell them how great they are or challenge them to row-sham-bo...which ever works best for you!! :D

Yeah I am thinking it might be best to fly under the Absolute radar with miSSionary as my hall pass. Got any must do rides out there? Less epic the better as I want Aidan to have a good time as well.

I got it!!
Go to the top of the hill with the big "S" on it...point the bike down (and I mean straight freaking down man) and well...I doubt Aidan will complain about the whole "slow" thing?? That or let TomP chime back in with a much better option. :D

It must be lunchtime, Cole's waking up.

FrontRanger - Sounds like you have a young 'un to show around so I'll let Tom provide the trail info. I'm planning to ride my rigid singlespeed per your suggestion all over the darn place after I find camping or something....

There's a new trail we worked on back in April up by that big "S" off of the Spiral Rd. Pretty nifty.

There are some nice spots on the rd up to the shavano TH. I am pretty sure its all blm in there. there are some good spots overlooking the valley with salida below.
Shavano as in Mt. Shavano? That sounds promising. I think we will roll into Salida on Sat morning and check in with Absolute. Couldn't hurt to pick up a guide book and what not

Head up 50 towards Monarch Pass. There is a sign for Mt. Shavano and Tabeguache pointing to the right, i think its county rd 211 but I may be way off. Turn right and follow that road for a few miles and you enter the Shavano Wildlife area or something like that. There are plenty of nice pull-offs to either side of the road in there. I prefer to drive up the road a few miles and take one of the right little side rds to camp. Great views and it's usually pretty quiet, though I am usually there in the winter so there isnt much traffic.
This is a typical winter morning view from one of these spots:
