I'm going to the Chalk Creek Stampede MX race on Sunday but was thinking about heading up early Saturday to get in some trail/XC riding. I assume that the Monarch Crest trail is buried in snow since the elevation is high but are there any good technical trails around the area that will be rideable?

2 weeks ago the Rainbow was still super snowy. See my Snow's not dead yet post over at Passion for my hike through snowbanks. The stuff behind Tenderfoot Hill (S Mountain) is certainly dry. Head up the jeep road, take a right on any trails you see, they tend to loop back towards town.

If I was racing the next day I'd probably do little loops on S mountain. If you're looking for a place to stay, check out the Best Western there, ~$50. the last couple times I stayed there.
