RS Domain questions

I have seen a couple threads on taking the domain from 180 down to 160, but I would like to go the other direction. This seems easy enough if its just a spring side change.

I guess my biggest question is if the domain chassis itself is the same for the 180 and 160 travel versions.

The 160 & 180mm Domains are the same, including spring. Only the spring shaft changes. It's a10 minute job, I've done it on my Domain. Here are the part numbers for both sizes that can be ordered through your dealer.

I got the info on the RS website under service in the dealer spare parts catalog.

Ditto, done the same here. Basically, if you look at this attached image from the RockShox spare parts list, going from 160 to 180, you're replacing the part #13 w/ a longer spring shaft. All the chassis/internal parts for a non-U-turn Domain are otherwise the same, 160 vs 180 (see spare parts list link, part numbers are identical, except for the spring shafts).

I'd recommend pulling the lowers and and replacing the oil on on both sides of the lowers, but it *is* possible to swap the spring shaft by just unbolting the shaft (bottom bolt on the coil side (L) lowers), removing the top cap/spring/springshaft and then re-assembling w/ the 180mm spring shaft, with fresh oil in the lowers, of course.

For future reference, ALL of this kind of info can be found in the service section of the RS site.

Download parts list, compare part numbers....model to model, config to config...lot of parts are the same or compatible within the RS products.
You don't need to buy anything to change the domain travel. I just did mine today. If you have a spacer (ones from a Tora would do, but I used a bit of pvc that had the right diameter hole in the middle) you basically pull the shaft out, remove the bottom out spring, slide the spacer on followed by the bottom out spring, put it all back together and cut down your coil spring to match the spacer you just put in.

As an example I'm selling my DH bike, it didn't sell so I figured I'd keep the Domain, only problem is that the STP should really only go to 140mm travel, so I put a 30mm spacer into the Domain to make it 150mm and cut my coil by 30mm. She works just fine, I applied the same principle as works for most air forks such as my Tora 318 Air, to change travel. The Moco side should not be affected at all because on the Rock Shox chart both the 160 UTurn and the 180 hold the same volume of oil in the moco side.

Anyway now I'm splitting up my DH bike I get to keep the nice coil domain (I'm a fan of coil since owning it and despite the extra weight I'm a fan of the steel stanchions, hence the reason I don't want to buy a Pike etc). And I get to keep my Rhynolite wheel with the 20mm throuh axle.

In that diagram part no 14 is the bottom out spring, the spacer goes before that.

Ducktape, while this would work for a 180mm to 160mm conversion, it will not work for 160mm to 180mm (unless someone else did it to that fork earlier). The 160mm spring rod is 20mm shorter than the 180mm.
Bugger, sorry I didn't read the first post properly. You're 100% correct!
I've one available if someone want it

Does anyone have the 180mm shaft assembly? They seem to be tough to find w/o going straight to a dealer.
Is it possible for the 318 U turn model to go from 160mm to 180mm?

I'm in the same boat, so bumping the question... 160 u-turn to 180 static possible?

*edit: after checking diagrams on the pdf, it looks like the top caps would have to be replaced too... still looks possible - anybody done this?
You won't have the u-turn, but you can convert it to a fixed 160mm or 180mm if you want.
hey diamondback x6, what parts will I need to make the change to 160mm uturn to 180mm static?
just got my 2011 sxtrail 1 with the domain RC, how do I know if it is set at 160 or 180mm? I guess measure the sanctions that are exposed?

It should be 180mm, according to the specs I've read.
