totally defective, warranty claim or return for full refund/new bike

EDIT: nope, it's thick coating edges not metal crack imho
Well, QC1 and QC3 think it is just fine!

Kind of looks like it could be from stamping the serial #

possibly...who in heck decided that a huge open slot is good for cables... vs cable-sized ports like everyone else does

little structural integrity where you need the it the most on the whole bike...the BB
Not liking what I am hearing. This is my first Specialized & first bike of this level (it is an Expert) even though its still lower end by most standards on this forum. Only ride is a test ride at the dealer & I only noticed this looking for serial number to register the bike. Dealer said believes is normal but is sending pics to Specialized to confirm. One other one to look at at dealer (different size) had kind of similar outline around serial number but not as pronounced as the one I got.
Dealer said believes is normal
If it is an option, I'd find a new dealer stat.

defective? I doubt it.

looks to me like there might have been some masking around that area at one point for one reason or another. also, given that the holes on the bb shell are threaded, I have to wonder if there is some plastic piece that's supposed to go there which specialized decided to omit at some point.

those holes are for cable guides

looking at it again...it looks like thicker paint and something
was masking the center...not a metal crack

so I am changing my opinion from busted to functions as designed
ugly, but just paint.

No official news yet but I believe I figured it out. Got out the magnifying glass & started picking at it with my fingernails. Looks like the frame is stamped then they hit it with a quick spray paint. Then they cover the the stamping with a masking tape (blue) & either spray or powder coat the frame thick--thick enough that if they did not mask the stamping it would fill it in enough it woudl be hard to read. After that they take a knife by hand & try to cut around the masking tape to break the paint, then peel off the tape to reveal the stamping under neath. The knife cut is not perfectly straight & on mine they rounded the corner leaving a corner of the tape behind. You can definitely feel the difference in the thickness of paint outside the serial number "box" where the tape woudl be & when picking at it I kind of revealed the blue of the tape.
Definitely relieved.
