Road trip to CO suggestions needed

689 Views 23 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  SkaredShtles
I'm going to be up for Yeti Tribe Gathering in Winter Park at the end of July for a weekend. After that we have the whole week so I want to find out what rides we shouldn't miss.

Hear sort of a tentative plan we have so far:

Golden area - Any suggestions?
Winter Park and surrounding - 3 or 4 days
Colorado trail from Kenosha to Breck - I have no idea on this so any suggestions are appreciated.
Crested Butte for a few days

Thanks everyone!

Do a search. TONS of trail suggestions just in the last couple weeks on all those destinations.
Thanks for the awesome suggestion. kidding
If you're already going to be in WP for the weekend, you don't need to spend more days there.... get out and see some other areas.

I'd do Crested Butte for 3-4 days and then head down to Durango, or maybe ride around Summit County to keep it closer. There are plenty of rides to keep you busy in all three of those places.

Oh, and maybe do Monarch Crest during the week? You should have it mostly to yourself.

Ummm... I was trying to save you some time - there are TONS of suggestions on EVERY ONE of your destinations in the first 5 pages of threads. Seriously.

I guess we could go over it all again.

I love how SS can elicit almost the same response from a CO-FR newbie within the first four posts of a thread. That's talent.

Kenosha -> Vail.

+1 to the Crest (ride it before they close it down) and you can't go wrong in CB!

Close it down?
There's been an effort over the past couple of years to designate the area as Wilderness .. which = no bikes. According to some of the folks actively involved it's still moving in the wrong direction ... lots of equestrians and hard core tree huggers don't want bikes in there, :-( If it goes down, it will be a HUGE loss to one of the best trails in CO (IMHO).
I thought the whole Monarch Crest/Wilderness thing had died?

That's a really confusing route. See, you get on the Colorado Trail at Kenosha, and you follow it to Breck. :D

Want me to draw a map? Here you go!

OK sorry I'm an ass.
Still alive ... an progressing

Nope, in fact there was an article in the CB paper on this just ~4 weeks ago. It is very much alive, just moving slower than the backers has originally pushed for. Dave Wiens is involved, so maybe someone going to see him speak at REI can get his first hand perspective ... I'll be busy riding the Butte! :)

Um, duh. The trail trends to the WEST. If he follows your map he'll end up in Denver.
