Friend is looking to sponsor a team for the Whistler Gran Fondo (all smooth road) and I'm considering doing it on my mountain bike.

Can anybody recommend a slick tire for a 30mm ID (35mm) ID rim? Would swap with something narrower, but it's a pretty light carbon wheel setup and would want to keep the XD driver for top end speed.

Bike is around 23lbs, will run it locked out and throw a 36t (have 9t small cog on the cassette) so that should be plenty I would think.

Is tubeless a possibility or recommended?

Schwalbe Marathons are excellent. Can you run something wide? There's the Surly Extraterrestrial.

Vittoria Terreno Zero. Should be available really soon. I’ve spent some time on a preproduction 38c on 30i rims and it’s plenty of tire for the rim, and quite fast rolling.
